Polyhymnia

This beautiful engraving from the 18th century depicts Polyhymnia (also Polymnia), the Greek Muse of sacred poetry, hymns, and eloquence. It was engraved by Thomas Jefferys, a famous royal geographer, and is an example of the Neoclassical period's love for allegorical accuracy.

In the artwork, Polyhymnia is depicted in the classic, thoughtful pose—her figure leaning, deep in contemplation and placing her finger on her mouth. Her attire is depicted in great detail, which speaks about the advanced skills of the artist working during the mid-1700s.
