Habit of the Governor of the Low Countries for the King of Spain in 1576

by Thomas Jefferys

The following historical plate first published by Thomas Jefferys during the 18th century is quite interesting since it depicts the clothing that a Spanish governor wore while in the Low Countries in 1576 as an ambassador of the Spanish crown.

The year 1576 witnessed a number of events including the Spanish Fury and the Pacification of Ghent. This particular year saw a great use of ruff, a stiffened garment of that era, the doublet, which is a padded jacket, and trunk hose.
