Habit of an Ensign of the German Infantry in 1588

by Thomas Jefferys

Thomas Jefferys' engraving from 1757, entitled "Habit of an Ensign of the German Infantry in 1588," represents the zenith of Renaissance martial pageantry. This print illustrates the unique "Landsknecht" style that extended until the end of the 16th century; style known for its flamboyant individuality and tactical significance.

This illustration describes a high-ranking soldier (Ensign/Fähnrich), whose role was to serve as the heart of the unit. The main task of such a person was to guard the banner of his company – highly prestigious job with considerable dangers associated with it.
