Habit of a Swiss Officer in 1588

by Thomas Jefferys

This intricately engraved plate, originally created by Thomas Jefferys in the 18th century, provides a highly detailed image of the uniform worn by the Swiss Officer during the Renaissance period. This depiction was made in 1588 and is representative of the transitional phase in which the uniforms of mercenaries were giving way to the more formal uniforms used by military orders throughout Europe. The officer wears a highly impressive outfit that makes use of the famous "slashing and puffing," with a double-tunicked doublet and broad breeches indicating nobility and military strength.

The engraving is extremely valuable as a historical source of information regarding European armor and fabrics.
