Common Dress of a Monk of the Order of St. Bazil

by Thomas Jefferys

This is a copper plate engraving by Thomas Jefferys showing an authentic portrayal of religion during the 1700s as seen in the common dress of a monk from the Order of St. Basil. This depiction shows the monk dressed in the traditional black cassock that features the pallium and the mantling mandyas.

This engraving depicts the functionality and symbolism of the Basilian clothing by using simplicity of the lines to emphasize the vow of poverty while keeping the dignity of the Eastern Rite. It is one of the most highly acclaimed pieces of ethnography in historical prints, and hence it forms a valuable addition to any collection of religious and costume artifacts.
