This engraving by Thomas Jeffreys provides insight into the Grand Duchy of Moscow during a time of rapid growth and internal change. The subject wears the classic Kaftan, encrusted with heavy frogging, indicating not only his status but also the severe weather conditions in Russia’s steppes.

The man’s appearance is characterized by the distinctive Kolkpak (high fur hat), as well as his sidearms, usually the Saber or Berdish (poleaxe), identifying him as an elite soldier. This interpretation by Jeffreys from the 18th century of the costume dating back to 1577 reveals how much of an interest there was in Russia’s court in Western Europe, combining both practical winter clothing with the luxurious and elegant styling of Muscovite nobles.
