Indeed, this extremely rare and intriguing engraving, produced by Thomas Jefferys in the 18th century, shows Queen Elizabeth I in a truly unique political setting, namely as a Protectoress of the States of Holland. As opposed to many portraits which show the famous “Virgin Queen,” this particular illustration highlights Elizabeth's role as a diplomat and ruler who was able to control the Low Countries. As can be seen from the picture, Queen Elizabeth I wears an intricate gown with the typical high ruff, numerous jewelry decorations on the bodice, and even the kirtle. Being part of Jefferys' celebrated ethnographic set, this engraving is not only of great historical value but also shows how strong were England’s connections in terms of geopolitics in the times of the Renaissance.
