Habit of the Sultaness, or Empress of the Turks in 1700

by Thomas Jefferys

This engraving from the year 1700 portrays the Empress of the Turks wearing clothes that typify the splendor of Ottoman courts. She wears a kaftan, which is a long and ornately embroidered robe that has floral motifs, which she wears over a thin gömlek and şalvar.

Her prominent headdress, known as the hotoz, is richly jeweled and veiled, marking her superiority among members of the Imperial Harem. This engraving by Thomas Jefferys is noted for its emphasis on "costume as character" where it represents both the clothing and strict social structure of the East during the 18th century.
