Habit of the Grand Seignor's Body Guard in 1749

by Thomas Jefferys

This copperplate engraving from mid-18th century, made by Thomas Jefferys, gives us a rare insight into the military glory of the Ottoman Empire. Depicting a guard of the "Grand Seignor," the Sultan of the time, this print depicts him in full regalia, emphasizing the awe and mystique associated with the Ottomans at that time.

Being well known as a Royal Geographer, Jefferys earned his reputation through his depiction of the "habits" (costume) of many nations with great accuracy. In this particular piece, he portrays the layered Ottoman fabric clothing, the tall turban complete with feathers, and even the weapons used by the soldiers to portray their might.
