Habit of a Lady of Constantinople in 1750

by Thomas Jefferys

This print entitled "Habit of a Lady of Constantinople in 1750" is the creation of Thomas Jefferys, a prolific English geographer and engraver. It was published in his influential four-volume publication A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern from 1757 to 1772.

The picture offers an interesting glimpse into the European obsession of the mid-18th century with "The Orient," providing insight into the complex dress styles and luxurious fabrics used by the Ottoman upper-class women.

This copperplate engraving shows Jefferys's detailed depiction of the Turquerie fad in Western fashion during this time. This portrayal of a "Lady of Constantinople" shows her wearing typical garments.
