Habit of Woman of Wotiac in Siberia in 1768

by Thomas Jefferys

This very rare engraving from 1768 done by Thomas Jefferys offers us an exciting look at the indigenous population of Siberia during the 18th century through ethnography. As a famous mapmaker and royal geographer to King George III, he depicted the dress and life of the Wotiac (or Udmurt) woman in great detail.

The woman shown here belongs to the Wotiac tribe, which is now known as the Udmurt, living in the Siberian wildlands. This engraving portrays the unique multi-layered dress worn due to the cold Siberian climate.
