Habit of a Flemish Gentleman in 1620

by Thomas Jefferys

The hand-colored engraving by Thomas Jefferys is an example of a retroactive illustration of Early Baroque fashion.

Among other distinctive characteristics, this period was marked by a falling lace collar, which contrasts with the cartwheel collars of the earlier period, as well as the slashed doublet, revealing the soft, fine fabric underneath. The heavy fur-lined cloak and the wide-brimmed felt hat are symbols of warmth and wealth for the mercantile class in the Low Countries at the time.
