This picture is a perfect example of the film culture of the 1980s and portrays the faded marquee of E.M. Loew’s Merrimack Park Drive-In in Methuen, Massachusetts, taken by architectural photographer John Margolies. The marquee shows the two features of films from the 1980s, which are “Top Secret!” and “Airplane,” with the price “$6 A CAR.” Using the faded paint, visible light bulbs, and the bold lettering, Margolies emphasizes the nostalgia associated with New England drive-ins.

Preserved in the Library of Congress archive, Margolies’ work immortalizes the golden age of American automobility, pop culture, and retro commercial signage.
