St. Bruno's Lily

By Pierre-Joseph Redouté

One of the finest prints of masterful print making from the 19th century, this stipple engraving depicts the beautiful geometry of St. Bruno’s Lily (Paradisea Liliastrum, also known as Phalangium or Lis St. Bruno). Executed by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the renowned “Raphael of Flowers,” it is one of his characteristic stipple engravings with the intricate dots allowing for very fine shading. It features translucent white petals set against rich yellow stamens and tall, elegant green stems.

Issued in his most famous work Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs (Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers, 1827-1833), it can be considered the ultimate achievement in botanical engraving of the Enlightenment era.
