Malmedy Rose - Rosa Malmundariensis

by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Create an atmosphere of imperial France in your home with this beautiful botanical illustration of the Malmedy Rose (Rosa Malmundariensis) created by Pierre-Joseph Redouté.

Redouté was considered one of the greatest painters of flowers and referred to as the "Raphael of Flowers." The artist worked under Napoleon’s wife Empress Joséphine as the court painter who specialized in recording the beautiful and extensive rose gardens at Joséphine’s estate Château de Malmaison. This particular work was drawn as plate 71 in Redouté’s famous series of paintings, Les Roses, published between 1817 and 1824. In this work, he uses a revolutionary technique of stipple engraving, which allows him to paint with dots.
