Cattleya Lawrenceana - Sir Trevor Lawrence's Cattleya

by Henry Frederick Conrad Sander

This botanical masterpiece represents the spirit of Cattleya Lawrenceana, an ornament of the Victorian orchid era. This illustration first appeared in the great work called Reichenbachia and was created at the request of the “Orchid King” Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, who named this orchid after Sir Trevor Lawrence, president of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Characterized by slim pseudobulbs and bright colors that range from pink to purple, the Cattleya Lawrenceana continues to embody the beauty of the botanizing era of the nineteenth century. The attention to details that the artist paid is obvious when examining the veins of the labellum and subtle changes of the petal gradient.
