This remarkable piece of 19th century Italian pomological illustration art depicts a fruit-bearing branch of the Pistacchio Gentile, or Pistacchio Vero Domestico (Cultivated or Common Pistachio). The plate is taken from the highly celebrated and renowned work of Giorgio Gallesio known as Pomona Italiana, and is one of the most beautiful examples of the Romantic era scientific illustration art. The image was drawn from life by Domenico Del Pino in 1826 and engraved by Giuseppe Pera in 1831.It shows the sumptuous textures of the developing fruits with the rich spray of its compound leaves. The wonderful use of the watercolor wash makes it one of the most appealing plates in the entire historic series.
