Captured through the stunningly precise hand of the artist that gave him the nickname “The Raphael of Flowers,” the image of English Iris (Iris latifolia / Iris Xiphioides) serves as an example of the best of 19th century botanical illustrations. Originally included in his masterpiece "Les Liliacées" (between 1802-1815), the image is transformed from a humble flower to an eternal representation of natural perfection and intense colors (Lack, 2024).Using Redouté's legendary stipple engraving method, he managed to achieve stunning gradation of colors, capturing the intense indigo blue of the flower, the subtle sky blue veins, and the bright pop of yellows from the iris falls. Each curve of the sword-shaped leaves and transparency of the petals reflect the philosophy of the artist – blending rigid scientific truth with the graceful elegance of French Romantic art (Jaipuriar, 2020).
