A superb copper plate engraving entitled "Habit of a Dutch Soldier in 1588" (Soldat Hollandois). Engraved by the celebrated English geographer and engraver, Thomas Jefferys, for his groundbreaking publication of multiple volumes on the subject of costumes, A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern (London, c. 1757-1772).The intriguing historical print showcases the transitional uniform worn by the Dutch foot soldier during the era of the late Renaissance in the 16th century and during the Eighty Years' War. The soldier is shown dressed entirely in his period costume, complete with an early firearm (either an arquebus or matchlock musket) on his shoulder, a sword, powder flask, a distinctive bag, a doublet, long breeches, and a tall cap adorned with feathers.
