Full Dress of a Lady of Quality in Barbary in 1700

by Thomas Jefferys

This fascinating engraving from the eighteenth century by Thomas Jefferys provides an insight into the attire of noble North Africans. The title of the piece is "Full Dress of a Lady of Quality in Barbary." This work is dated to about 1700 and is one of very few images that portray the style of dress of the Maghreb (today’s Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya).

The engraving shows both Ottoman and native Berber and Arab influences on the culture. A "Lady of Quality" would wear many layers and elaborate jewelry as a reflection of her wealth and social standing.
