Habit of a Crim Tartare in 1700

by Thomas Jefferys

This hand-colored engraving comes from the pioneering works of Thomas Jefferys, dating back to somewhere around 1757-1772, in London. This rare European look at the nomadic style of the Crimean Tartars gives us insight into their way of life during the 18th century. Unlike the other stereotypical drawings created during that period, Jefferys' work was known for the efforts of "Strict Fidelity," in terms of portraying the particular texture of the silk and fur-lined caftans, and the head coverings typical of the steppe noblemen.

The print represents the "Habit of a Crim Tartare." The person depicted is shown wearing traditional clothes, which include many-layered robes along with weapons indicating the man's high social standing and preparation to ride a horse. The excellent line-work typical of Jefferys' workshop adds dynamism to the stiff fabrics.
