This is a rare original antique engraving that beautifully embodies the classic simplicity of Audubon's master work from the West – the Say's Flycatcher (Muscicapa Saya, now called Say's Phoebe). Exquisitely hand colored, the engraving displays two of the birds standing on the beautifully rendered botanical branch. Characteristically of Audubon, the painting presents the subtle ash-brown and cinnamon colors of the birds against the delicate botanical sample. The engraving was originally produced by Robert Havell in London for the Birds of America series between 1827 and 1838. This rare piece by Audubon is linked with his collaboration with pioneer naturalists and was created in honor of American zoologist Thomas Say who had discovered the species. A great illustration of Audubon's ornithology of 19th century America, this antique plate boasts a large plate mark and excellent quality of coloring and engraving.
