Summer Habit of a Kamtchadal in 1768

by Thomas Jefferys

This unique copperplate engraving, made by the famous cartographer Thomas Jefferys, is one of the historical evidence concerning the native population of Kamchatka Peninsula, known as Itelmens. Dating back to the period when the European explorers were engaged in geographical discoveries, the picture shows the "Summer Habit" — an outfit created for wearing in the harsh and volcanic environment of the Eastern Russia.

Contrary to the fur clothing used in cold winter months, this dress focuses on the skins and the elaborate sewing of the clothes. Additionally, the image of the figure always depicts traditional accessories or a background reflecting the sea/river way of life. In particular, the creation by Jefferys is especially valued because of its contribution to the study of the manners and customs of remote regions popular during the era of Enlightenment.
