White Downy Rose - Rosa Tomentosa

by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Introduce the famous Malmaison gardens into your interior using this splendidly restored botanical artwork of the White Downy Rose (Rosa Tomentosa), created by the talented Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Published originally between 1817 and 1824 in his renowned publication Les Roses, this stunning artwork perfectly embodies the raw yet fragile beauty of European wild roses.

Being the renowned "Raphael of Flowers," Redouté, the official court artist of Marie Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, introduced the color stipple engraving method into flower art. Instead of working from the lifeless samples, he painted only those flowers which were alive. The White Downy Rose variety has light-pink to white petals, very intricate leaves with serration and thorns on the stem.
