Frankfort Rose - Rosa Turbinata

by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Transport yourself to the glamour of 19th century French courts with this fantastic reproduction of Rosa Turbinata (Frankfort Rose / Rosier de Francfort). Initially painted by none other than the renowned Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often referred to as the "Raphael of flowers," the artwork belongs to his extensive folio called Les Roses (1817-1824).

Redouté was the court artist to Marie Antoinette and later on to the wives of Napoleon Bonaparte – Josephine and Marie Louise. Contrary to what most contemporary artists did, he used live specimens to paint his masterpieces and not dead samples as in most cases. That is the reason why this dusty rose with its delicate petals still manages to look fresh and alluring as it was 200 years ago.

This botanical illustration comprises a spectacular central rose with unopened buds, along with finely detailed green leaves of a serrated shape.
