Subcorymbose Hudson Rose - Rosa Hudsoniana Subcorymbosa

by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Step back in time and introduce the golden era of botanical art into your collection with this stunning copy of the Subcorymbose Hudson Rose (Rosa Hudsoniana Subcorymbosa), produced by the famous artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté.

Known as the “Raphael of Flowers,” this original artwork was commissioned for Redouté’s famed 19th century folio titled “Les Roses” (Vol. 2 circa 1824-1828). In particular, this rare example highlights one of the historical varieties of the North American marsh rose that was grown in France by Monsieur Ternaux prior to 1821.

This illustration is particularly notable because of its “subcorymbose” form—that is, the beautiful pink and vivid crimson blooms can be seen growing in loose, flat flower clusters known as corymbs. Through his unique engraving process and the skillful application of watercolors, Redouté brings the translucent quality of the petals, vein structure of the leaves, and crisp detail of the buds to life.
