Spiny Leaved Rose of Dematra with White and Yellow Flowers - Rosa Spinulifolia Dematratiana

by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Transport yourself back to the glorious era of botanical artistry with our beautifully recreated version of “Rosa Spinulifolia Dematratiana” ("The Spiny-Leaved Rose of Dematra"). This amazing artwork was originally created by the world-renowned Belgian artist and botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté during the years 1817-1824 and demonstrates his unique skill of color stipple engraving.

Famed for being referred to as the "Raphael of Flowers," Redouté depicts the rarest type of flower in Europe, the "Dematra Spiny-Leaved rose," discovered in Switzerland by Dean Dematra prior to 1818, taken directly from life in the king’s gardens of France. There is an interesting contrast used in the composition where beautiful pure white blossoms, containing delicate yellow inner stamens, can be seen growing on a rough branch with clearly defined sharp individual thorns, as well as lush green foliage surrounding it.
