Rose of Provins - Rosa Gallica Maheka Flore Subsimplici

by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Bringing history to life, capture this botanical print of Rosa Gallica Maheka (Flore Subsimplici), otherwise known as the Rose of Provins and French Rose, right in your own home. Originally painted by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, who is considered by many to be the "Raphael of Flowers," this painting was taken from his famous book Les Roses, published in Paris from 1817-1824 with the patronage of Empress Joséphine Bonaparte.

Unlike other double-petal varieties that have been developed over time, the French rose has an impressive "flore subsimplici" which displays a wonderful array of golden-yellow stamen surrounded by a background of vibrant crimson and magenta petals. Stipple engraving was used by Redouté to achieve a natural appearance for each of the petals, as well as for the elegant thorny stem and blooming bud.
