Pleuronectus Rhombus - The Pearl

by Marcus Elieser Bloch

Explore the world of 18th-century natural history through the beautiful double-sided image of Pleuronectus Rhombus by Marcus Elieser Bloch, known as “The Pearl” (“Das Viereck” or “La Barbue”). Showing both sides - the elaborate pattern of the upper one and the plain side of the lower one - at natural size (Natürliche Grösse), this antique engraving is characterized by extraordinary accuracy of anatomy.

Taken from Bloch’s Ichthyologie, this piece of art is complemented with elegant hand-written script and scale and is a valuable addition to the collection of zoological engravings.
