Olivier De Clisson, Constable of France

by Thomas Jefferys

This antique print is an exquisite portrait of Olivier de Clisson (1336-1407), the notorious French general and successor of Bertrand du Guesclin. He was given the nickname "The Butcher" (Le Boucher) due to his obsessive hatred for the English and his exceptional skills as a warrior. As the Constable of France during the reign of King Charles VI, Clisson was a pivotal figure in French politics.

This artwork highlights the evolution of medieval chivalry into organized military tactics in the latter half of the 14th century. It is the work of Thomas Jefferys, a prominent geographer and engraver.
