This illustration from 1581, which has been well-known since its inclusion in Thomas Jefferys’ extensive compilation of dress around the world in the eighteenth century, represents an important moment in the West’s interpretation of the East. Although dating back to the end of the sixteenth century, the inclusion of this illustration in the collection of Jefferys illustrates the ongoing interest of Europeans in the complex dressing styles of the Mughal period in India. The “East Indian” figure represented here wears clothing that reflects both utilitarian practicality and class distinction.
