Habit of an Ambassador from the Great Mogul

by Thomas Jefferys

This exquisite engraving published by Thomas Jefferys in his mid-18th century masterpiece, A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, offers a unique glimpse into the glory of diplomacy within the Mughal Empire.

In this image, we see "the Habit of an Ambassador from the Great Mogul" and the elaborate combination of both Persian and Indian styles of dress. The individual wears a jama, a long and wide robe that ties around the waist with a patka (a sash). He also dons narrow pants and juti shoes. Each piece of the costume, from the beautiful floral patterning to the grand turban worn, represents the majesty of the Mughal court.
