Habit of a Turkish Standardbearer in 1749

The copperplate engraving below is from the mid-eighteenth century and was published by the famous geographer and mapmaker, Thomas Jefferys, who was known for his contributions to geographical studies through his book, "A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations." This engraving illustrates a "Standardbearer" (also referred to as a "Sancaktar").

What makes this engraving unique is its meticulous representation of the Alem and silk fabric of the banner compared to the heavy fabrics used in the soldier's outfit. It is one of the finest representations of "Turquerie," which refers to the Western obsession with Oriental dress and customs during the Enlightenment era.
