Habit of a Thessalonian Bride in 1581

by Thomas Jefferys

This beautifully crafted engraving reflects the splendor of the traditional attire worn by the bridal attire of a bride from Thessaloniki (Salonika). This image of the bride is dressed up in her traditional dress that combines elements from both Byzantine heritage and Ottoman luxuries. The main focus in the image is on the luxurious fabrics along with the elaborate headdress that marks the high social standing and status change for brides in the Aegean world.

In fact, this engraving by Thomas Jefferys originally made use of woodcuts dating back to the 16th century and therefore can be described as both a historical artifact and an artistic piece in itself. It demonstrates the stiff silhouettes and elaborate fabric of the "Levantine" style to the Western observer.
