Habit of a Matron of Swabia in 1577

by Thomas Jefferys

This particular depiction is one that brings out the nature of Swabia in the late 16th century. The Matron, dressed in the typical attire from the time of the Reformation in Germany, is not only an illustration of fashion but also a reflection of the social structure and religious belief of the Holy Roman Empire.

This print was made famous by the celebrated geographer and engraver, Thomas Jefferys, in the 18th century. In it, he captures the nature of fashion typical of 1577. This is evident in the wimple and the heavy draping of fabric seen on a well-respected and mature woman of the time. It should be noted that at this particular period, fabric was used as a means to distinguish regions and social morality.
