This print illustrates the regal elegance typical of Polish noblewomen during the 18th century, when Poland was distinguished by a distinctive amalgamation of Eastern and Western European styles of culture and fashion. This dress features the Polish robe known as the kontusz, a wide tunic-style garment that is defined by the prominent 'wyloty' (slits in the sleeves). These slits are flung open in order to expose the fitted sleeves worn beneath the garment. Her dress is decorated with luxurious fur edging made out of either sable or ermine, and her outfit includes a head covering as well as a waist belt. This engraving, made by Thomas Jefferys, gives a detailed depiction of the heavily decorated textiles worn during the Polish Enlightenment period.
