A Kamtchadal in her Full Dress in 1768

This unique illustration from the 18th century portrays the fine craftsmanship of the inhabitants of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The object of interest is shown dressed in her "Full Dress." It was a special outfit worn for both harsh climate and fashion reasons.

In particular, the illustration focuses on the intensive use of local peltries, namely, a bulky hooded parka made out of reindeer or seal skin. The edges of sleeves and hem are decorated with typical embroidery and fringe trimming characteristic of the Kamtchadal artistic tradition. The position of the model and her footwear (torbasas) speak of the practical necessity imposed by the environment in which these people lived.
