The Colony Lighthouse Now at Symen of a Subdivision on Route 29 in Clay Township, Michigan

by John Margolies

Capture a piece of Historic Roadside Americana in this classic 1988 photograph captured by John Margolies, one of the world's most famous architectural critics and photographers. Entitled "The Colony Lighthouse Now at Symen of a Subdivision on Route 29 in Clay Township, Michigan," this photograph features a unique structure located on the coast of Michigan’s St. Clair County.

Characterized by a tall white tower with a brown conical roof, a balcony for looking, and a distinctive "C" crest, the building is situated next to a classic suburban house set against green surroundings and a blue sky. One of the works collected in the Roadside America collection of the Library of Congress, the photographs taken by Margolies show the whimsical and disappearing architectural style of the middle of the 20th century that was typical of American road travel.
