This exceptionally beautiful and much-sought after early 19th-century botanical drawing represents a young year-old date palm seedling (Pianta di Palma di un Anno). Taken directly from the famous Pomona Italiana (1817–1839), this superbly crafted colored engraving perfectly combines science and art, demonstrating an ideal fusion of scientific precision and Neoclassical aesthetics. The scene features close examination of the anatomical development of a yearling Phoenix dactylifera, showcasing its emerging vivid green lanceolate leaves growing out of a complex fibrous root bulb. Remarkable graphical qualities of this print – achieved through delicate stippling and realistic hand coloring – stress the rare nature of this masterpiece of Gallesio, whose original edition consisted of a very small number of subscription copies.
