This exquisite original stipple engraving is a rare example of botanic art from the beginning of the 19th century featuring the beauty of the Yellow Amaryllis (Amaryllis lutea / Sternbergia lutea). The exceptional talent of the so-called “Raphael of Flowers,” Pierre-Joseph Redouté, is demonstrated by means of an incredible three-dimensionality of golden-colored petals created by applying gradually increasing tones of shading. The perfect harmony of flaring petals and green leaves of this plant allows us to appreciate both scientific precision and artistic qualities characteristic of French Court botany. The printing of this plate was done by using the technique of stipple engraving supplemented by hand colorings, and therefore this botanical art can be considered the highest expression of the golden era of plant illustrations and is greatly sought after among print collectors and interior designers.
