Stained Ixia

By Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Introduce the iconic gardens of French royalty to your home. This stunning botanical image depicts the Stained Ixia (Ixia Maculata), beautifully illustrated by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, known for his work as the "Raphael of Flowers."

Created between 1802 and 1816 as part of Redouté’s famous folio Les Liliacées, this illustration was produced under the intense and enthusiastic patronage of the Empress Josephine Bonaparte. Redouté captured images of exotic flowers blossoming in her famous gardens at Malmaison.

This artistic creation focuses on the contrast of different features of African Corn Lily, including its tall, thin stem, swordlike leaves, and star-shaped petals, marked with a distinctive stained center. Every stroke in the picture reflects the beauty of the stipple engraving technique used by Redouté in the nineteenth century.
