Habit of the Princess of Walachia in 1700

by Thomas Jefferys

Here is an excellent example of an engraving on copperplate, illustrating the court fashions worn by Wallachian nobility at the beginning of the 18th century. This particular illustration is included in the works of the renowned geographer and engraver, Thomas Jefferys, and describes the "Habit" or clothing of a Princess, influenced strongly by Phanariot culture from the Romanian principalities.

Jefferys' contribution to the "Dress of Different Nations" is one of the finest, representing a connection between the medieval past and modernity.
