In the ornithological print depicted here, we see the work of artist John James Audubon in his depiction of the Towhe Ground Finch (Pipilo Erythrophthalmus), also known today as the Eastern Towhee. This plate includes an image of a male and female couple of this bird sitting on a bramble branch of the Common Blackberry (Rubus villosus).Audubon skillfully contrasts the appearance of both birds in the composition, as the male bird occupies the top of the branch while exhibiting his black wings and tail, red-sides and white belly, while the female sits beneath him in a quiet grey-brown coloring. This plate is considered to be an amazing portrayal of the interconnection between the birds and their native environment.
