Peanut Store in Atlantic City, New Jersey

by John Margolies

Enter the sunlit Atlantic City Boardwalk of the latter '70s through this sharp photograph captured by acclaimed roadside architecture photographer John Margolies.

This colorful photo highlights Peanut World—an authentic Jersey Shore institution complete with dimensional orange lettering, a colossal peanut statue sitting on the roof edge, and old-time storefront signs promoting the sale of fresh peanuts, fudge, and souvenirs. Above the roof rises an enormous old billboard advertising Cutty Sark whisky, evoking the taste of 20th-century commercial pop art.

Over the course of several decades, Margolies photographed many examples of America's vanishing vernacular architecture and commercial signs. This beautiful photograph was taken in bright colored film against the blue sky and is a fantastic piece of nostalgia-filled Atlantic City history—ideal for coastal living rooms, home bars, and game rooms alike.
